The short answer

Prepare a coherent explanation of who owns the company, what it does, where its money comes from and how the account will be used. Licensing and bank onboarding are separate decisions. A well-organised application helps the bank assess the business; it does not guarantee approval or a fixed opening date.

Why does a bank ask about the business behind the licence?

Central Bank guidance requires licensed financial institutions to identify and verify customers and relevant beneficial owners and understand the relationship. [1] A licence alone does not explain the commercial purpose of transactions or a complex ownership chain.

Before applying, write a short business-model summary that a person outside your industry can follow. Describe the service or product, customer type, sales channels, expected countries, payment currencies and why the company needs the account. Keep projections labelled as projections and distinguish them from existing contracts.

What should you put in the preparation file?

  • Current company registration/licence and constitutional documents appropriate to the legal form.
  • An ownership chart that reaches the individuals behind corporate shareholders, plus the supporting identity documents requested by the bank.
  • Signatory authority and consistent identity/contact details.
  • A plain-language business summary and realistic transaction expectations.
  • Genuine contracts, invoices or other commercial evidence where available; state clearly if the company has not traded yet.
  • A clear source-of-funds explanation with supporting records as requested.

How do you keep the application consistent?

Check the activity description against the licence, the website and customer documents. If the company sells software but the website mainly advertises unrelated goods, explain the difference before submission. Resolve spelling or signatory inconsistencies rather than leaving the bank to infer them.

Ask the chosen bank for its own current checklist. Requirements differ by the company's circumstances and the institution’s risk assessment. Submit through approved channels and record what has been sent, by whom and when; sensitive shareholder documents should not circulate through an unrestricted shared folder.

What should you ask beyond approval?

  • What balance, service charges and transfer fees apply to the account product?
  • Does it support the currencies and collection methods the company needs?
  • How are payment approvers, user access and transaction limits managed?
  • What records will be needed when the business or ownership changes?
  • How will payroll and accounting reconciliation work once the account opens?

Plan for dependencies rather than a promised date

Do not sign a supplier commitment on the assumption that a new account will open by a particular day. Separate banking preparation from banking approval in the launch schedule. Agree a lawful plan for handling early company expenditure and document owner funding properly with your accountant.

Once operational, reconcile the account regularly and keep business transactions separate from personal spending. Good records make future enquiries and year-end work easier; they also reveal costs that are otherwise easy to miss.

Questions worth answering

Can an adviser guarantee that a bank will approve the company?

No. An adviser can help organise documents and explain the business, but approval remains the bank's decision.

What if we do not have customer invoices yet?

Explain that the company is new. Ask the bank what alternative evidence it accepts and keep intended activity or projected turnover clearly distinguished from completed business.
