The short answer

Check the UAE Media Council advertiser-permit requirements and the appropriate business licence before a UAE-facing campaign. Advertising can include unpaid promotion; purely editorial content and specified own-business or employer promotions are treated differently.

Is every social-media post advertising?

The Council’s FAQ covers promotion of brands, products, services and activities for payment, non-monetary compensation or free of charge. It also identifies exceptions for certain own-business and employer promotion and for purely non-advertising media content. [1] Classify the actual campaign rather than assuming only paid posts matter.

A business activity licence and an individual advertiser permit are different approvals. Residents, citizens and visiting advertisers have different application routes. The Council’s advertiser guide is the reference for the permit process; the relevant economic authority handles the business activity. [2]

What should be checked before accepting a campaign?

Confirm applicant status, the target audience, declared social accounts and the route for any visiting advertiser. Ask who holds the relevant permit and which party will check campaign disclosures and content requirements. An agency engagement does not automatically remove every advertiser’s responsibilities.

Use the current application for fees, documents, validity and renewal. The Council’s older FAQ and newer guide show differing fee-waiver descriptions, so this guide does not quote a fixed payable amount. Obtain the amount for your actual route before building it into a campaign price.

How should a creator keep the paperwork?

Retain the brief, advertiser details, agreed claims, permissions, disclosure instructions and approvals. Distinguish a genuine review from a commercial endorsement and get supporting evidence for claims supplied by a brand. Keep a calendar for permit renewals and a record of the approved channels rather than guessing that one approval covers every future campaign.

A checklist to take into your next meeting

  • Classify advertising versus editorial content.
  • Check the applicant’s resident or visitor route.
  • Verify business-licence and permit scope separately.
  • Confirm current fees and declared accounts.
  • Keep campaign evidence and disclosure approvals.
