The short answer
Confirm the assigned VAT period, due date, outstanding amount and payment status in EmaraTax. The VAT administrative-penalty framework changed from 14 April 2026. An older calculator using 2% immediately and 4% monthly should not be presented as the current universal calculation.
Which deadline should you check?
The FTA states that VAT returns and related payments are due within 28 days after the tax-period end. [1] Check the actual assigned period and due date shown for the registrant rather than assuming every business has the same monthly or quarterly calendar.
Filing and payment are different actions. Confirm the return was submitted, the amount due is correct and the payment has been allocated to the right tax account. A bank instruction or a screenshot showing a draft return is not proof both obligations were completed.
Why has the old penalty example been removed?
The FTA announced that Cabinet Decision 129 of 2025 took effect on 14 April 2026 and amended administrative penalties, including VAT late-payment calculations. [2] The earlier article’s fixed 2%/4% example and 300% cap have therefore been removed from current guidance.
Determine the treatment from the applicable current decision, affected dates and the actual tax position. This guide does not invent a replacement rate or promise an automatic reduction. If the business disputes an amount or needs an available relief process, confirm the current eligibility, evidence and application route directly.
What should you do after finding a problem?
Gather the return, ledger, bank evidence and EmaraTax notices. Identify whether the issue is unpaid tax, a filing error, a failed payment or allocation. Arrange the correct next action promptly and retain confirmation. Improve the calendar with preparation, approval and payment dates before the final deadline, including time for payment failures.
A checklist to take into your next meeting
- Confirm the period and actual due date.
- Check return submission separately from payment.
- Reconcile outstanding tax and allocation.
- Apply current rules to the relevant dates.
- Retain correction evidence and improve the calendar.
