The short answer
A sound compliance process identifies the entity’s tax position, keeps supporting accounts, confirms deadlines and records submission and payment. If an error appears, assess the correct current correction route instead of relying on an old penalty table.
Which records support a return?
Keep sales and purchase evidence, bank reconciliations, asset and liability records and documentation for owner or related-party transactions. The FTA explains that relevant Corporate Tax records are retained for at least seven years after the related period. [1] Keep records accessible and limit sensitive information to people who need it.
Taxable income and accounting profit can differ because adjustments are required. The ordinary income threshold and rate should therefore not be applied directly to bank receipts or headline turnover. [2] Ask the preparer to explain the reconciliation clearly enough for the authorised approver to understand.
How should submission and payment be controlled?
Confirm the actual tax-period end and applicable deadline. Assign preparation, review, approval, submission and settlement separately. Retain the return acknowledgement and payment confirmation with the period’s records. A calendar reminder cannot compensate for unresolved accounts.
Check conditional treatments such as qualifying free-zone status against the actual income and requirements. [3] Keep the evidence behind the assessment and review material changes before carrying the conclusion into a later period.
What should happen when a mistake is found?
Describe the error, affected period and supporting evidence, then identify the appropriate current FTA correction process. Assess any resulting payment or penalty position directly rather than copying a fixed schedule from an old article. Do not backdate records or promise automatic waiver. Document the correction and the control that will prevent the same error recurring.
