The short answer
Determine whether the entity is a taxable person, its actual tax period and registration position, then plan records, returns and payment. Assess conditional reliefs separately. Company location or a licence description alone cannot settle the whole tax outcome.
What does the headline rate actually describe?
Under the ordinary regime, the threshold relates to taxable income and the 9% rate applies above AED 375,000. [1] It is not a turnover test or a tax on every dirham once the threshold is crossed. Special regimes and entity circumstances require separate assessment.
Ministry of Finance guidance explains that taxable income begins with accounting income and necessary adjustments. [2] Keep records of income, expenses, assets and related-party transactions so the preparer can support those adjustments rather than work backwards from a bank balance.
How should a free-zone company assess its position?
Free-zone entities are within Corporate Tax; conditional treatment for a Qualifying Free Zone Person applies to Qualifying Income. [2] Do not replace that assessment with the older simplified rule that every company avoiding mainland trade is exempt.
Ask for an assessment of actual activities and income streams and the evidence required to maintain the position. Record material changes during the year. Other reliefs, including Small Business Relief, have their own conditions; the current extension covers eligible periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. [3]
What should the calendar contain?
Track registration separately from the general nine-month return/payment timeframe and keep the entity’s confirmed period dates. Retain relevant Corporate Tax records for at least seven years after the period concerned. [4] Assign preparation, review, approval, filing and settlement so the company can prove what was completed.
